If you are visiting family here from abroad, beware. First, everything here is more expensive than pharmacies in Lamezia. My mother paid 10 euro for the same probiotic in Lamezia and here they charged her 16 euro. Second, there was a woman (I think a pharmacist) working. I have spoken Italian my entire life since I was a baby, both standard Italian and the local dialect. I think I speak it well considering I have been coming here and to other parts of Italy, my entire life and I even took Italian language back in the USA. Of course, I do have a slight English accent as anybody who is switching between languages will have and also because I was born and have grown up in the United States. This pharmacist or worker or whatever she was immediately assumed I did not speak Italian and started using her hands to make gestures at me as if I was a child or ignorant. Then, she went to get a paper to write down 20 percent. She clearly knew I understood her language and we were conversing in her language, but she just wanted to be rude. I have come across some rude people in Italy, but this was by far one of the rudest encounters. Then, rather than simply apologizing, she kept trying to defend herself and saying she just wants to help people. She can simply ask somebody if they want to speak in Italian, no need to assume they do not understand and start to make obnoxious hand gestures. I understand it's a rural village and people are isolated and very xenophobic, but they should know that almost nobody who doesn't speak Italian travels through these parts. Everybody who visits Soveria Mannelli speaks at least a little Italian as the only reason somebody would have to visit this city is if they have roots there or in a neighboring village. In my case, my mother was born in Adami. When traveled here with my grandparents in 1997 and stayed for months and months, I even went to school here briefly. I grew up with my grandparents who spoke to me only in Italian. I am also an educated person and dual citizen. She could have simply asked me if I spoke Italian or if it was ok to speak to me in Italian not assumed I did not and start to do sign language and write down 20 percent as if I do not know what the word venti means. Being spoken to like I was a child was extremely humiliating. I hope she does not speak in this manner to immigrants or others who have foreign accents. She may really discourage somebody from speaking Italian. Whats hilarious is this type of encounter usually only takes place in Southern Italy where many locals do not even speak proper Italian themselves.
